Cornwall 365's Best Bonfire Nights in Cornwall 2016

Remember, remember, the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot
I know of no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

With Bonfire Night falling on a Saturday this year, we’re getting ready to celebrate one of Britain’s rather unique traditions. For those not in-the-know, it started in 1605 when Guy Fawkes and his comrades failed in an attempt to blow up King James I and the Houses of Parliament. Each year on 5th November, Bonfire Night celebrates Guy Fawkes’ arrest by burning bonfires (sometimes with effigies of Guy made by local children) to serve as a reminder that treason should never be forgiven or forgotten.

Growing up, Bonfire Night for my family was always an excuse to have a bit of a party, wrap up against the cold and eat some warming food together, usually on the beach with an enormous crackling bonfire.

Our special treats were hot dogs that made our hands sticky with ketchup, and home-made ‘Bonfire Toffee’ – dark, treacly and totally delicious. Find a good recipe from BBC Good Food here.

Where can I celebrate?

Read on for a list of some spark-tacular bonfires and firework displays in Cornwall this weekend.
